John Welling (1), the ancestor of one branch of the Wellings of this region, was of Welsh origins, and came in 1727 directly from Jamaica, L.I., and purchased after a year's lease, in 1728, 223 acres in Hopewell, of Terit Lester, to whom it had been conveyed through John Muirhead and John Fitch, by John Reading and James Trent, commissioners of the loan office. He died about 1790, having married and had children: Elizabeth, born 1730, married Jacob Carle, of Ewing; and John (2).
